The Latest in the Middle East

Houthis / Yemen
Saudi-led airstrikes: The top-ranked story is an AP report, flagged as a high-threat alert, that a Saudi-led coalition says its jets are bombing the Iran-backed Houthis. It is single-source so far, with no corroboration.
Ground fighting: GDELT carries a headline that Yemeni government forces claim they have retaken Mocha from the Houthis. A related piece says government forces are aiming for Sanaa, but a Houthi defeat "will be a challenge". Both are unverified claims.
Escalation signal: Yemen is one of five countries driving the global strategic risk score of 70 (high), alongside Ukraine, Russia, China and Pakistan.
Casualty data: UCDP events are stale. The latest, around 29 Aug, show small clashes of 1–4 deaths each between government and Presidential Leadership Council forces.

Iran
Thermal spikes: Four thermal anomalies were detected over Iran in the 18:00 UTC window, all rated critical. The strongest are z=4.7 at about 31.5°N 48°E and z=3.3 at about 30.5°N 47.5°E, in the southwest. Their cause isn't identified.
Israeli warning: An Israeli envoy said "Iran must come to terms with US or face military consequences", citing proxy attacks.
US blockade: Iranians face soaring medicine prices under a US blockade and sanctions. A top Iranian official has admitted the economy is in a dire state.
Travel advisory: Iran and Yemen are both at "do-not-travel". The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia are at "reconsider".
Related incident: WSJ reported on security failures behind an attack on a FlyDubai flight, with a co-pilot allegedly planning it beforehand. I didn't verify any link to the Iran or Houthi conflict.

Gaps in the data
Hormuz: The only chokepoint data returned is cached from 5 April. It shows critical risk, 100% disruption and 432 incidents in 7 days. I wouldn't treat it as current.
Military posture: The Iran theater reads "normal" with 5 active flights, no tracked vessels and no operations. That looks low against the other signals, so I'd treat it with caution.
Hotspot escalation scores: The hotspot escalation call failed with a permissions error, so there's no 1–5 escalation ranking. Reconnecting the World Monitor connector with broader access in your connector settings should fix that.
