Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has directed the Pentagon to mobilize its cyber and intelligence capabilities to defend the 2026 midterm elections from foreign interference. In a memo dated September 22nd and announced Monday, Hegseth ordered U.S. Cyber Command and defense intelligence agencies to prioritize defending election infrastructure from "foreign malign influence," working alongside the Department of Homeland Security. The directive does not send military personnel to polling places, and Hegseth called protecting the election "a no-fail mission."
